Swann Auction Features Lewis Carroll, Drtikol and Hine Images

An arched-topped albumen print by Lewis Carroll, depicting Alice Liddell, of Alice in Wonderland fame, reclining on her couch with her two sisters, Edith and Lorina, 1858, is one of the featured images at Swann Galleries' sale of Important 19th & 20th Century Photographs on Tuesday, October 21, which will begin at 10:30 am. The photograph, estimated to bring $10,000 to $15,000, is one of only six known prints.

Other highlights include: Julia Margaret Cameron's rare and poignant post-mortem of her adopted child, Adeline Grace Clogstoun, 1872; Andrew J. Russell's Executives of the Union Pacific, Joining of the Rails, 1869; Frantisek Drtikol's sensual female figure study, Étude, an exhibition pigment print, 1926; a vintage print from the family of Lewis W. Hine, Empire State Building, 1930; Paul Strand's Woman, Patzcuaro, Mexico, 1933, printed late 1960s; and Ansel Adams's classic Moonrise Over Hernandez, 1941c/printed 1978.

Contemporary photographs include Robert Mapplethorpe's photogravure, Lilies and Shadow, 1983 and Cindy Sherman's large-format Ancestor, 1985.

The photographs will be on exhibition at Swann Galleries on Monday, October 13 to Friday, October 17, 10 am to 6 pm; Saturday, October 18, 10 am to 4 pm; Sunday, October 19, 12 pm to 5 pm; and Monday, October 20, 10 am to 6 pm. There will be a Gallery Walk with the Specialist on Saturday, October 18 at 3 pm.
