Todd Webb Archive Acquired by MUUS Collection

The MUUS Collection has acquired the Todd Webb Archive. The MUUS Collection is home to a group of photographic archives, including Larry Fink, Rosalind Fox Solomon and Deborah Turbeville.

After working with Webb for nearly a decade before his passing in the year 2000, executive director Betsy Evans Hunt made great strides in bringing Webb's work into the spotlight. In 2016, Betsy hired Sam Walker to be the director of the archive, and together they coordinated numerous high profile museum exhibitions, publications, and gallery shows.

Most meaningful perhaps was a move that was made behind the scenes. In 2017 the archive made a deal to reunite a significant portion of work that Webb regretted having sold to a dealer in the mid- 1970's. The dealer never held up his end of the bargain, and Webb was unable to claw much of it back, including his typewritten journals dating back to the 1940s. This unfortunate deal was reportedly a source of great sadness for Webb. By bringing that work back into the fold, the archive felt that the vision and depth of his work was made whole again.

Hunt said, "With these accomplishments in mind, we are thrilled to pass the proverbial torch to the MUUS Collection. We are confident they will be a powerful champion for his work and fully solidify his reputation as one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century."
