--The Royal Society has digitized and made available over 10,000 letters of the astronomer and photographic pioneer Sir John Frederick William Herschel FRS (1792-1871) for the first time on the Royal Society’s Science in the Making archives portal: https://bit.ly/3xuDj0z. This collection of nearly 10,900 letters, drafts, copies and notes is the largest repository of scientific correspondence from and to Sir John Herschel. There are many photography connections, including correspondence with Julia M. Cameron and William Henry Fox Talbot.

-- A jury in Los Angeles has convicted embattled art and photography dealer Douglas Chrismas on three counts of embezzling money from Ace Gallery, which he founded. In 2013, the business filed for bankruptcy protection. Chrismas, who is 80, will be sentenced on September 9th. He faces up to 15 years in federal prison.
--Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen died last month at the age of 89. Born in 1935 in The Hague, Van Manen began her career as a fashion photographer in the 1970s. However, she soon shifted to documentary photography, establishing a unique and well regarded style over four decades. Working mostly with a handheld camera, Van Manen created intimate and poignant photographs of ordinary people and commonplace scenes, produced during extended trips to Europe, America, China and the former Soviet Union. She was represented by the Yancey Richardson Gallery in the U.S.
--AIPAD’s Board of Directors created an annual AIPAD Community Contribution Award for an individual at a member gallery this year. Chosen by the AIPAD membership, Arnika Dawkins of Arnika Dawkins Gallery Has received the in- augural award for going above and beyond for the photographic community. Dawkins is recognized for her commitment to creating vibrant educational opportunities with artists, curators, and industry experts through the AIPAD Talks programming. Responding to the pandemic environment, Dawkins initiated virtual talks in 2022 and has since continued organizing online sessions for AIPAD’s international audience. During the 2023 fair, Dawkins reinvigorated the on-site programming with talks from 2023 AIPAD Award winners Mattie Boom and Hans Rosemboom, curators of photography at the Rijksmuseum, and artists participating in Fotografiska’s exhibition, Hip Hop: Conscious, Unconscious among the lineup.
