About This Image

Photographer's stamp, AG Schostal label, and pencil notations and descriptions on the verso.Lothar Rübelt (April 8, 1901 in Vienna, Austria--August 4. 1990 in Klagenfurt, Austria) was an Austrian sport and a press photographer. Rübelt also worked extensively as a still photographer on various films, including the famous ski film "White Noise" (1930) and the first Tyrolean postwar film "Winter Melody" (1946).The Austrian photographer Lothar Rübelt was born in Vienna in 1901. Even at a young age, he was already a great sportsman. In 1920, he was a member of the Austrian Olympic team as a sprinter. Some years later, after retiring from competing, he continued in the world of sports but as a photographer. At first Lothar worked with his brother Ekkehard on travel films, such as "The Motorcycle Above the Clouds", which premiered on January 31, 1927 at Vienna's Flottenkino cinema.Rübelt was one of the most famous sports photographers in Europe along with Martin Munkacsi, who was the first photographer to use movement in his fashion photography and who inspired Richard Avedon to do the same. Munkacsi--like Rübelt--began his career as a sports photographer, particularly in football. In 1936 Rübelt covered the Berlin Olympics for Berliner Illustrierte die Olympischen Spiele, under the direction of Leni Riefenstahl, whom he continued to work for on later films. Between 1938 and 1939 he worked mainly as a photojournalist, documenting Austria’s annexation by Germany, as well on as documenting the Polish campaign. After spending three years as a photographer in a military hospital in Vienna during the World War II, he returned to sports and film still photography in 1945. Even without high speed film available, he was able to capture great sequences of diving and football. In 1985, Rübelt received the Prize for Visual Arts from the city of Vienna. He died in Klagenfurt in 1990.
