About This Image

Third generation photographer, son of Marcus and grandson of Walton, Gilbert Adams (1906-1996) trained with and assisted his father, later specializing in photographing the ballet. Marcus began his photographic career by assisting his father Marcus Adams, along with fellow photographers Bertram Park and Yvonne Gregory, at their studio based at Mayfair, London. In 1934 Gilbert saw the ballet dancers Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin performing at the Oxford Playhouse, and went on to produce many haunting images of dancers on stage and behind the scenes. He worked extensively with the Markova-Dolin Ballet, Stoll Theatre, Sadlers Wells, Ballet Rambert and Festival Ballet.Gilbert opened an elegant studio in Market Place, Reading, opposite St. Laurence’s Church. He taught art and photography at Reading, Henley and Bracknell Colleges, and was a leading member of the Reading Guild of Artists. Students joined him in life drawing classes at his Market Place studio. He was also very passionate about sailing, which he photographed locally around Reading and Henley-On-Thames.Like his grandfather, father and brother, Gilbert Adams earned his reputation as a photographer. Most notably, he obtained a commission by the British Council to make a series promoting Britain to tourists and also directed the lighting for the Coronation of Elizabeth II.
