Born on Sept. 18, 1831 in Groton, MA, Dr. Samuel W. Fletcher was one of Pepperell's most respected and beloved doctors. He graduated from Harvard in 1858 and carried on a practice in Pepperell, MA until entering the Army on August 15, 1863. As a surgeon with S Company in the 32nd Massachusetts Regiment, Dr. Fletcher was present at the bloody battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Mine Run and Appomattox. He received the Distinguished Service Award and was promoted to Full Surgeon in June, 1865. He returned to his practice in Pepperell, after mustering out on June 29, 1865. He continued to remain active in a number of medical societies, Including the Middlesex County Medical Society and the Massachusetts Medical Society, and contributed a number of useful inventions to science. He passed away on April 12, 1910 in Pepperell.With label on recto of the mount below the image that gives full details.
