About This Image

Photograph of the very important photographer J.J. Heilman published well after he died, perhaps as a memorial. Images of Heilmann are very rare. Born in 1852 in Mulhouse, Alsace, he became a photographer and publisher of photographic images. This pioneer helped found the influential Societe Francaise de Photographie. Heilmann died in 1859 at the very young age of 37. he lived in Pau and was noted for his photographs of the Pyrenees and Alsace. He exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1855. He came up with processes to color photographs and to enlarge prints that he patented in 1853. He is in the Jammes and Janis book, The Art of French Calotype, and in the Brettle book, Paper and Light: The Calotype in France and Great Britain, 1839-1870.
