The October 19th Bonhams & Butterfields auction will feature a number of works by California photographers, including: 13 Ansel Adams prints, most of which were printed in the 1960s, such as Half Dome ($5,000-7,000); seven prints by Ruth Bernhard, such as In the Box, Horizontal ($8,000-12,000); John Gutmann’s complete set of Ten Photographs ($8,000-12,000); six photographs by Edmund Teske, all estimated $1,200-1,600 (Teske’s first retrospective exhibition at the Getty Museum is on until September 26th); and six lots of Brett Weston photographs, including the portfolio Hawaii, Leaves and Lava ($8,000-10,000).

From the 19th century there are 17 cartes-de-vistes of Union and Confederate Generals and President Lincoln ($3,500-5,000). From the turn of the century there are four orotones by Edward Curtis, including Canon de Chelly ($10,000-13,000).

Works from the second part of the 20th century include Diane Arbus’ vintage print, Mimi with Daughters ($10,000-15,000), which Arbus was commissioned to photograph for the owner in 1969; a rare portfolio of 10 photographs by Duane Michals, Homage to Cavafy ($10,000-15,000); and Robert Mapplethorpe’s platinum-palladium print of Ken and Tyler ($15,000-20,000).

The preview will be held in Los Angeles, Friday-Sunday, October 8-10, 10 am-5 pm; and in San Francisco, Saturday-Monday, October 16-18, 10 am-5 pm. The auction will take place in San Francisco on Tuesday, October 19th at 4 pm.
