AIPAD Photography Show Returns to Pier 94 the First Week of April

After a successful inaugural performance in its new location at Pier 94 last spring, the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) will hold its 38th edition of The Photography Show again at Pier 94 from April 5-8, 2018. Nearly 100 of the world's leading photography galleries will take part in this year's event. Thirty-five book dealers and publishers will also be on exhibit. The Show will open with a vernissage on April 4th.

One of the world's most prestigious annual photography events, The Photography Show is the longest-running and foremost exhibition dedicated to the photographic medium, offering a wide range of museum-quality work, including contemporary, modern, and 19th-century photographs as well as photo-based art, video, and new media.

The Photography Show will feature galleries from around the world, including the U.S., U.K., Europe, Asia, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and South America. With four sections, the Show will offer work from both AIPAD members and new exhibitors, as well as younger galleries, and book dealers and publishers. The Photography Show will present special exhibitions of private collections. This year's special exhibitions include an exhibition from the collection of Joe Baio, a collection from Photographic Center Northwest, and a special exhibition of work curated by Sir Elton John.

Entitled "Forever Young", selections from the Joe Baio Collection of Photography will be exhibited publicly for the first time at The Photography Show. Spanning the history of the medium from the 19th century to the present, the Baio Collection is built around the themes of childhood and adolescence with images evoking the unalloyed joy, rambunctious mischief, lack of inhibition, and confounding changes experienced during the early years of life. Nearly every medium and movement in photography’s history is represented in Baio’s collection paralleling the medium’s aesthetic and social progress. Vernacular photography hangs democratically beside related images by famous photographers. Culled from his collection of 6,000 images, the selection for The Photography Show, curated by Baio and Anne Griffin, is installed salon-style to echo the collection as it is displayed in their home.

In 1966 Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, two college students in Oakland, California, launched The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. Though active for less than twenty years (1966–1982), the Panthers indelibly pierced the public consciousness. 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Seattle chapter, the first outside of California; after AIPAD, this exhibition will be on view at Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle through June 10th. "All Power: Visual Legacies of the Black Panther Party" is drawn from a book of the same name and showcases a select group of contemporary black artists, including emerging and internationally acclaimed practitioners, women and men spanning 22 to 70 years of age, who have been informed or influenced by the Panthers.

Sir Elton John has invited exhibiting AIPAD members to submit work for an exhibition around the theme, "A Time for Reflection". Photographs that Sir Elton John finds inspiring and relevant to the theme will be featured at The Photography Show in a special exhibition. The works will be available for purchase and participating galleries will donate a percentage of the sale price to The Sir Elton John Charitable Trust.
