Kostiner was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1950. He attended Brown University. He then attended the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology. He taught at Columbia College in Chicago from 1973-81 as an Adjunct Professor of Photography. He currently is a faculty member of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has had selected exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Moming; Hamilton College; New York Museum of Modern Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Library of Congress; Bard College; Gallery 312; Brown University; Canadian Center for Architecture; Luminescence, Truman College; Visions From Chicago, Northwestern University. His work is in several publications: Courthouse, Horizon Press; Aaron Siskind, Pleasures and Terrors; Swimmers, Jerry Gordon; New York Times Review; and American Heritage Magazine. His work is in the collections of the New York Museum of Modern Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Library of Congress; Northwestern University; Canadian Center for Architecture; and the Center for Creative Photography. He has won an award from the Canada Council for the Arts.
